This is what happens when you wake up for sunrise. Piazza Navona is deserted, except for the pigeons. I’ve walked through here hundreds of times, but never this early in the morning, and never when it’s completely empty. I will miss Rome terribly.

After picking up some gelato I strolled around the neighborhood a little bit. I turned a corner and saw this. Juggling gelato and trying to get the camera out of the bag… tricky, but worth it. Finding little moments like this around the next corner is one of the reasons I love Rome so much.

Commonly known for having an interesting obelisk perched on top of an elephant out side the doors, Santa Maria sopra Minerva (Basilica of Saint Mary above Minerva) is a wonderful church to visit. Construction of the church began in the late 13th century. It is one of the relatively few Gothic churches in Rome. It looks pretty sparsely decorated when compared with some of the other churches not far away. I like it for its simplicity, and the art. There is a beautiful Michelangelo statue on display that is quite fascinating. I stood at the back of the church and snapped this photograph of the nave before walking around to enjoy the art.

Today was a very exciting day. I went to the Stadio Olimpico to watch AS Roma take on Novara. It was an exciting match, with a lot of goals, and there could have been more. The photograph above was taken in the closing moments of the game during the celebration for the fifth and final goal. Soon after this everyone was singing “Grazie Roma!” (Thanks Roma!)

I enjoy coming to the Spanish Steps to admire the hustle and bustle of one of Rome’s busiest areas. It’s an interesting mix of tourists and locals, vendors and police. Today I picked out a relatively quiet spot about three-quarters of the way up the staircase and sat for a while reading my book and enjoying the people pass by. The higher you climb, the smaller the crowd (path of least resistance, etc, etc). When I was done I descended the stairs and took this photograph from the bottom.
